Blog Journal #6
In the CPALMS Computer Science standards section, the standard SC. 912.TI.1.6, "Describe how technology impacts personal life" stood out to me. This standard encourages students to think critically about how technology influences their daily life, relationships, communication, learning, and even mental health. For the students learning about technology, they will get to see the positive and negative effects. There are so many positives, like staying connected to others, quick access to information, and creativity. However, with the many positives, we must make our students aware of the challenges, like high levels of screen time, privacy, or pressure from social media. I feel prepared to implement this standard because I already use technology in my personal life and feel like I have grown to have a healthy relationship with it, so I know how it shapes behavior and productivity. I would want to strengthen my ability to teach about it through class discussions around online responsibility and digital citizenship, since these are important topics to teach properly.
I explored the Educator Toolkit on CPALMS, and one of the resources I found to be very helpful was the Original Student Tutorial that walks students through how technology connects to their daily choices. These are great resources for students because it meets them where they're at and makes learning feel relatable. In my classroom I would want to use these tutorials to either introduce new topics or help review things we've already learned. These resources give students the chance to learn at their own pace and this helps build confidence in independent learning.
Being a strong internet searcher is incredibly important for teachers because we have to use it all the time to look at standards, lesson ideas, and reliable classroom materials. One of the skills we learned this week that I plan to use moving forward is Google Advanced Search. It is so helpful in narrowing down search results in so many different ways, to find credible and up to date information. It can be used to locate resources from trusted educational websites or to find credible research without having to scroll through thousands of websites that are not unrelated. Becoming familiar with Google Advanced Search will save so much time and make it easier to find high quality resources that will best serve students.
